Top Beijing Couturier Guo Pei Launches First Shanghai Boutique
This week, Beijing-based couturier Guo Pei (Jing Daily interview) launched her first Shanghai boutique on the city's historic Bund, offering her newest semi-couture line, Guo Pei Xi, with a focus on wedding and special occasion attire. Widely renowned for her avant-garde gowns, fantastical proportions, and low-key personality, Guo Pei envisions the boutique as her very own living room, where clients, attended by personal fashion consultants, are able to select off-the-rack designs that will then be fitted and tailored to their specifications.
Launching her own label in 2007, Guo Pei and her Rose Studio have racked up an impressive A-list clientele in China, dressing leading figures in business, politics, and media, most notably hosts of the CCTV Spring Festival program, and finding fans in celebrities like Lady Gaga and Zhang Ziyi. As Hong Huang wrote this spring in her ChinaFile column for WWD, "If there is Haute Couture in China, it would have to be in the Rose Studio by Guo Pei. But it is nothing like any atelier you have seen in the West."
The opening of Guo Pei Xi closely follows the designer's recent participation in Singapore's Digital Fashion Week, where gowns from her "China Wedding Gown" exhibition and one exclusive look from her "Legend of the Dragon" show (first unveiled in Beijing in May) graced the runway.
With a greater number of elite Chinese shoppers looking inward for uniquely Chinese-designed pieces and authentic quality (here, we're thinking of brands like Shang Xia), Guo Pei Xi, continuing Guo Pei's one-of-a-kind style and sensitivity toward both Chinese classicism and international couture, hopes to see the same prestige that Guo and her atelier have secured over the past five years.
