The Biggs Apple (like warm apple pie…) RMB 30

Two Aussie guys who started off by baking meat pies in their own kitchens and making personal deliveries have opened their own "Two Guys and a Pie" shop in the little backstreets of Sanlitun (behind Yashow market, around the corner of Revolution Bar and across from Nearby the Tree and Heaven Supermarket) and have recently expanded their menu to also include Warm Apple Pies (RMB 30) and Sausage Rolls (RMB 15) each.

This little pie shop first started out with three different pie options and a handful of sides (see full menu below), and they have now added two delectable pie options that win them that much more recognition and deserved loyalty.

This capital must seriously fail to supply the demands for this favorite childhood snack because I've noticed that the slightest mention of the words "sausage roll" instantaneously results in an audience of eyes that light up around me eager to learn where and when they can get their hands on some authentic sausage rolls.

A beloved British and Aussie savory snack, it's impossible to stop after only having one of these rolls. Made with pork and herbs for a well-portioned roll, this is the only "pie" that's a longer tube shape (as they are traditionally known to be).

Sausage Rolls in the Oven (made with pork and herbs)

Someone with a serious sweet tooth, I've been hassling Matt and Andrew (the two founders of Two Guys and a Pie) to create a dessert pie. As much as I enjoy and appreciate their devotion to meat pies, I find myself craving a sweet pie far too often.

Just in time for the winter season, the guys have now introduced their best pie of all (in my opinion) – their dessert pie is a warm apple pie appropriated named "The Biggs Apple".

Instead of your typical birthday cake, I bought a half dozen of these bad boys for one of my favorite foodie friends last weekend and they were a major hit all around.  A perfect dessert for the oncoming cold winter months, these toasty apple pies are made with the freshest ingredients, each one is a very generous portion (can be shared between two) and a unique dessert alternative that's guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser.

I recommend topping each of these apple pies with a scoop (or two) of vanilla ice cream.

If you have an oven or plan to bring these pies to a house party (a guaranteed-to-impress gift to present to a party host), I recommend ordering these pies frozen to bake them on-site for even better results (everything is better when served straight out of the oven).

These new additions aside, their most popular pie remains to be their "Slow Lovin' Aussie" Pie (RMB 25) made from Halal beef and onions with "Zheige Zheige Neige" (RMB 10), a combination of sides which translates to a layer of Potato Mash, Sweet Potato Mash, Mushy Peas and Gravy – something guaranteed to hit the spot when you're looking for something toasty warm and hearty on a cold's winters day (or better yet, a late night munchies cure/something to sober you up after a few too many drinks).

"Two Years on the Yangtze" - Peter Hessler speaks at Google

In 1996, 26-year-old Peter Hessler arrived in Fuling, a town on China's Yangtze River, to begin a two-year Peace Corps stint as a teacher at the local college. Along with fellow teacher Adam Meier, the two are the first foreigners to be in this part of the Sichuan province for 50 years. Expecting a calm couple of years, Hessler at first does not realize the social, cultural, and personal implications of being thrust into a such radically different society. In River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze, Hessler tells of his experience with the citizens of Fuling, the political and historical climate, and the feel of the city itself. Over the course of two years, Hessler and Meier learn more they ever...
