Gramercy: Class by the Glass

Packed with young, local professionals, Gramercy is evidence of a significant change in Beijing's wine culture.

Like the growing Cheers Wine Store chain, this place targets young people who are interested in enjoying reasonably priced wines with friends rather than shelling out for face-giving bottles or downing the cheap stuff in ganbei-sessions.

The wine list here is an exciting tome of around 130 bottles, with most in the RMB200-400 range. An impressive by-the-glass selection offers both hits and misses, but prices are low enough that it's not a huge risk to taste your way through it. We loved the light, fruity Californian Rex Goliath Pinot Grigio (RMB45), the nicely structured Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon (RMB35) and the dry Michael Schneider Riesling (RMB70). But we were unimpressed with the cheap tasting Chilean Sauvignon Blanc (RMB35) and uncharacteristically bland Ramirana Varietals Shiraz (RMB40).

There are decent snacks to pair, although they're not cheap. The large tapas platter (RMB88) comes with six pairs of tapas, from a delicious olive tapenade toast to disappointing bacon-wrapped shrimp. The large cheese platter offers an acceptable selection, but portions are too small for the RMB158 price tag, and it needs bread. Still, with good service, great ambiance and regular tasting events, Gramercy should enjoy real success.
