The Red Chamber: Don't Miss the Noodle Bar
We expected a high-end, private room kind of experience from this China World Summit Wingrestaurant, but instead found a buzzy, modern place with tasty, affordable food.
The menu is mostly Cantonese, but other Chinese cuisines are also represented. Off the dim sum menu, thesteamed rice flour rolls with shrimp (RMB28) were one of the highlights of our meal, made with impossibly crisp and flavorful shrimp. The barbecued roasted suckling pig (RMB58/person) is served with Beijing duck-style accoutrements, and very crunchy skin.
A traditional Beijing dish, the Chinese cabbage in mustard sauce (RMB18) has a nice presentation and tastes of honey Dijon—it’s a good appetizer to pique the appetite. The seared pork “Yunnan style” (RMB98) is actually prepared in a very light, Cantonese style, but the dish features delicious, perfectly cooked Yunnanese zucchini.
Our favorite part about Red Chamber is the Noodle Bar, located just outside the main dining room. Here, you’ll get a large choice of Shanxi noodles, broths and four add-ins for RMB38, or RMB50 with a drink. We loved the texture of our “cat ear” noodles, and the sour soup gravy was just perfect. Service is very good and even English-speaking. The décor is by the same company that did Kerry’s Kitchen, with beautiful lights that look like origami boxes hanging from the ceiling.
