A Celebration of Centuries and Wickets

This weekend, the Shanghai Cricket Club will be holding the Santa Fe Shanghai Cricket Festival, the first of what club president Oliver Austin hopes will be an annual event.

"We've arranged to have a weekend of cricket entertainment," Austin says of the festival which will mainly take place on the cricket grounds at the Shanghai Rugby Club fields. The event includes a Saturday challenge between corporate teams followed by a league challenge of cricket 6's on Sunday.

"The players really enjoy sixes so this event gives us an opportunity to give something back to the players," Austin says of the faster paced game. "It's been hard to come by a game of 6's in Shanghai the past couple of years and we're hoping that this will bring it back."

The weekend will be a celebration of one of the oldest clubs in Shanghai. Started in 1858, the Shanghai Cricket Club has had a storied history. Early games were played in the middle of the racetrack of what is now People's Square and regional games against Hong Kong and Singapore were routinely played. As the city's expat population grows, the club continues to thrive. They host a three division league with games played every Sunday. They are also continuing the club's tradition of holding regular games against Hong Kong and were the first club invited to Pyongyang to play organized cricket in 2009; an experience that Austin describes as, "phenomenal but a bit like being on The Truman Show ...
