Sushi’O: The New Location Improves Upon Its First
Until recently, Sushi'O was little more than a delivery stand on Yanqing Lu with a few seats at the sushi bar. It's now moved its operations into a much bigger venue on Yongkang Lu, and the early returns are promising.
The new Sushi'O is a full-fledged restaurant with a vibe that matches well with the rest of the Yongkang Lu aesthetic. Glass walls give way to exposed brick walls, and the crowd that fills it is, by and large, hip and energetic. It's a fun choice for a casual date, especially given the sharp service and value-minded prices.
Sushi'O's menu has grown by leaps and bounds since they first opened a year ago, and all the old selections are available alongside some just-added rolls and hot dishes. We started with the lightly sauced spinach salad topped with gobo (aka burdock, a potato-like vegetable) chips (RMB20). It's similar in construction to the salad at Tentekomai, but for now we still prefer the original.
Next up was sushi. The sashimi (RMB45 for the salmon) is fair for the price, both in cut and quantity, though the stars here are the creative specialty rolls. Sushi'O has over 20 options now, so we opted for an old favorite, the Philharmonic (RMB65), and a new entry, the wasabi kick roll (RMB65). The Philharmonic delivered as usual, topped with avocado and filled with cream cheese, salmon and an apple sliver to lighten it up with some fresh crunch, but the wasabi kick roll was a bit strong on its namesake ingredient—wasabi is dripped liberally on top, and it obscures a little too much the smooth white tilapia and tuna within.
They've also added some beef udon (RMB35) to the menu, and though that's not particularly exciting, we do recommend the cheese-stuffed tonkatsu (RMB38)—it's a fat kid's dream.
