Where is my umbrella ?
Summer time has come, the sun is shinning, and the weather is hot in Beijing ! If you travel to China you could notice one major thing walking in the street when it's sunny : Chinese women don't like the sun ! Walking out from your China hotel, you'll see Chinese women holding a common accessory, a parasol or an umbrella. Most of them have umbrellas, parasols are not that common since it is more expensive. Indeed women avoid sun light and tanning, because being beautiful is having a white skin. That criteria of beauty have deep roots in China since Chinese people invented parasols 2,000 years ago. First parasols were made of bamboo and silk, people use any materials from oiled transparent paper to nylon.
Beautiful and resistant parasols are made in Fujian and Hunan provinces. Parasols are made with oiled transparent paper and wooden frames that has been treated against mold and insects. Moreover, flowers, landscapes, and figures are hand-painted on it. These type of parasols can be used in both sunny and rainy days. But the most beautiful parasols are the silk ones. Parasols from Hangzhou are real works of art, the silk is as thin as a cicada wing and hand-painted too fixed in a bamboo frame. This type of parasols only weight 250g. Chinese parasols is one of the symbol of the country, they even incorporated it in their dances. Why not buying one as a souvenir from your trip to China ?
In addition, for a complete protection, Chinese women never goes out without sunscreen on their skin, they use it as a day care cream. During your Beijing tour you will see that in all touristic places funny hats are sold everywhere, because if they don't have any umbrella, they must be wearing some hats. Those funny hats, are paper hats with a vase form when it is unfold.
You should know that because Chinese girls don't like sun, they don't go swimming in the beaches, even if seaside tourism is developing China. So, if you ever travel to Tsingdao for example or Hainan you can sure that you'll relax in some peaceful beach and enjoy the scenery around.
