I Want Some “Zheige Neige”: Meat Pies Now in Sanlitun

Slow Loving Aussie Meat Pie with "Zheige Zheige Neige" Toppings

Two Guys and a Pie have opened shop!

After months of these guys only offering delivery for email or online orders (i.e. making Aussie meat pies in their bathrobes out of their home apartment's kitchen), they have strategically moved into the backstreets of Sanlitun to supply the high demand for tasty, hearty authentic Aussie meat pies when they're most craved – post-midnight, still intoxicated but ready to sober up hunger pains.

A quirky little concept started by Andrew Papas & Matt Wong(photo below), these guys may be lovable but they're serious when it comes to their pies. The pies are handmade and the stock for the fillings are all made in-house. No MSG is used in their cooking and when asked to describe their pies, they explained "Heaven in a pastry - hand rolled shortcrust pastry on the bottom, with flaky puff pastry enclosing a stew of slow simmered meat (or vegetables), sitting in a homemade gravy." If you're not already drooling uncontrollably after reading that statement, then there is either something wrong with your digestion or you're dead inside.

On the same street as Nearby the Tree across from Heaven Supermarket, these guys opened shop just last weekend (Friday and Saturday) for a little test run among friends and they were more than happy with the turn-out and are ready for another go this weekend (also only Friday and Saturday night from about 8:30PM-around 2-3AM).

To give you a better idea of what's on the shelves, here's what's being offered:

3 Pie Options (All RMB 25 Each):

  1. "Slow Loving Aussie" Pie made from 100% pure beef brisket, fried onions in a slow simmered, homemade beef reduction

  2. "Garden of Pie" – a tomato-based Italian vegetable pie with eggplant, celery, capsicum, onion, red wine, olives, herbs and spices. Think "capanata"

  3. "Sweet tweet" Pie  - Golden honey soy chicken filling, covered by a bed of sweet potato mash.

Sides aka "Bit of Sumfin Sumfin" (RMB 5 Each or 3 for RMB 10):

There are 4 sides to choose from, RMB 5 each or Combo of 3 for RMB 10.

  • Sweet potato mash

  • potato mash

  • Gravy

  • Mushy peas

I may have been well aware of their meat pies having ordered them multiple times to share among friends, but bringing in these sides is a whole new ball game.

I'd naturally go for Sweet Potato Mash and Gravy but when in doubt, ask the experts.

"I recommend the "zheige neige" which is potato mash, mushy peas and gravy. There is an off the menu sides combination which I made up on the weekend called the "zheige zheige neige" but if they want to know, people will have to ask what it is." – Matt Wong, Co-Founder of Two Guys and a Pie

Culinary Travels - Austin - No City Limits

You don't have to go to San Francisco or New York to find authentic, homegrown restaurants producing outstanding cuisine. If you've never been, Austin is a hidden gem-attractive, diverse, and delicious! I'll shine the spotlight on everything from barbecue to Italian, Chinese to international, and everything in between. We'll also hook up with Damian Mandola of Carrabba's fame for a visit to his unbelievable Italian market, and we'll visit the Chinatown Center, which is bringing a whole lot of China to a little slice of Austin. I think you'll find that dining is delicious deep in the heart of Texas.
