Moon Cake Madness During Mid-Autumn Festival
A Chinese confection traditionally eaten during the Mid-Autumn festival (coming up at the end of September), these little pastries are everywhere I seem to look. As tasty as they are (I especially like the ones filled with red bean paste), these moon cakes are more than just a symbol of China's mid-autumn festival, they have also become an obligatory gift this time of year.
If you're living in China, this is the time for you to start purchasing some fancy pantsy mooncakes to give as gifts to all your Chinese colleagues, friends and clients (or anyone you want to show a sign of gratitude and appreciation for).
But as foreigners, many of us didn't grow up eating moon cakes and don't exactly have a discerning palette when it comes to picking out which fillings or whether or not to go for the ones with an egg yolk inside, case in point.
Hence, I present, a couple of top-notch alternatives:
Migas' Mediterranean Mooncake
Migas is capitalizing on Beijing's high-demand for these traditionally beloved pastry desserts by creating their own take on a moon cake inspired by Europe's famous dessert called the "coulant".
"The French chef Michel Bras created this famous dessert in 1981. "Coulant" is a small sponge cake with liquid hot chocolate inside in the classical recipe. And this month we will have our "coulant" moon cake for you to try."
Although this isn't exactly a transportable dessert (you can't buy a box set and give it to someone as a gift), but you can very well invite them to dine with you at Migas and surprise them with this delicious new version of a moon cake for dessert. It reminds me of a chocolate fondant dessert, but in any case, it's bound to be a moon cake like they've never tasted before!
