M&S Café: A Friendly Spot for a Quick Bite

Marks & Spencer is no stranger to food—it’s got one of the best sneaky-good selections in town—but they’re now getting a bit more ambitious with the café in their newest venue. The fare is hit and miss, but if you’re looking for a quick bite, this is a good option.

The café’s strongest feature is its space. Friendly and bright with floor-to-ceiling windows on one side of it, there’s ample room to stretch out with a cup of their fair trade coffee. The menu features an inviting range of sandwiches and salads alongside muffins, cakes and hot meals. Beer, wine, chips and other M&S-branded items lie about looking for a dish to partner up with.

Our mango wrap (RMB39) from the pre-premade selections was bright like the café and fully stuffed with prawns; our chicken Caesar sandwich (RMB39) was slightly oversauced but also similarly meaty. Both would be good, quick lunch options, on the small side but perfect if paired with one of their large, chewy chocolate chip cookies (RMB8) or a soft blueberry muffin (RMB18).

We ventured further onto the vaguely English-themed hot menu to try the fish and chips (RMB59) but were left disappointed. Dry, coarsely battered and without tartar sauce to pair, it was left half-eaten. This is one café that’s better during the day than for dinner.

OUR RATING: 3/5
