Shanghai's Best Pho

Still haven't made it on that Vietnamese vacay you've been meaning to take? Go for the next best thing with a delicious bowl of the country's famed rice noodles. Check out Shanghai's best pho below.

Pho Real | Jing'an
It's clear why Pho Real has been popular since they opened. Their signature pho comes with finely sliced and still-pink rump steak, beef brisket, the tastiest beef meatballs we've ever had, and generous portions of the usual sides. At lunchtime, you can get a large bowl with a side of delicious deep-fried spring rolls, cucumber-tomato salad and a drink of your choice for RMB68 (RMB60 for the pho alone). Unfortunately, though they seem to have the best quality meat in the city, their broth is one of the weakest. But everything else ties in together so nicely, though, that you'll be "mmmmm" about the entire experience instead of "meh" about the broth.

Pho 26 | Nanjing Xi Lu
This place keeps with that weird tradition of naming a pho place by sticking a random number at the end of "Pho." What you get in their Pho 26 special (RMB38) is nicely traditional at great value: a deep bowl of firm flat noodles, generous amounts of cilantro, scallions and onions and a good mixture of pinkish beef slices, tendon, tripe and beef balls. All this swims in a beefy broth that isn't perfect but whose anise flavor still manages to come through nicely. They skimp a bit on the basil but we didn't find ourselves missing it too much.

Pho No.1 | Luwan
