China Travel Stampede Kills

WONG: And a stampede Kills 1 in a crowded train station in Southern China ANCHOR: Severe weather and a vulnerable transportation system are keeping millions of Chinese people from returning home this Chinese New Year. And the situation turned deadly this weekend in southern China, as one man was crushed, during a stampede to board a departing train. STORY: Officials said the man killed was a migrant worker, who was trying to get back home to see his family. Backed up trained schedules have forced passengers to spend days on end in the station. And at one point, over two hundred and fifty thousand people were packed together at the station. 21-year-old Xifeng has been waiting two days and two nights to board a train: [Xifeng, Train Passenger]: "It is very chaotic. Once you are not careful and fall down, then it is really bad luck for you." Despite additional security measures, authorities have not been able to guarantee the safety of passengers. And many of those waiting are anxious to leave the station. [Peng Xiongbao, 23-Year-Old]: "There is no way I can describe how it is like. Look at all these people, we are so tightly squeezed together. I do not know how to describe that feeling." Winter storms have damaged transportation lines and power grids.
