Dog on Fire: Let’s Be Frank
The latest on the growing hot dog vendor scene is Dog on Fire in the Sanlitun Village South. The hot dogs are either beef or pork sausage imported from the U.S., or soy-based veggie dogs. In addition to regular-sized hot dogs, you can order the mini combo (¥78), a sampler of three small beef or pork hot dogs with chili, red onion, cheese or classic toppings, or a similar mini veggie combo (¥25) with just two dogs. Dog on Fire offers a variety of beers, including Corona, running from ¥20-30. We didn't like the inexplicable sweetness of the veggie dogs. The imported beef and pork sausage dogs were decent, though not as good as the ones at Bar Uno Hot Dog. The toppings were hit and miss: the cheese sauce was bland, the chili sauce tasted like spaghetti sauce, but the classic, with mustard, ketchup, onions and relish, was good. The dogs are quite girthy here, but we prefer doing the garnishing ourselves at Stadium Dog. Side dishes include lumpy mashed potatoes with a just-add-hot-water gravy (¥15), and nachos that tasted as if they had just come from a bag of Tostitos from the corner store. Service was mediocre—we were the only customers there, and they still managed to forget our nachos.
