Lily’s: Greasy Spoon
This cute American roadside diner is a step back to Route 66, but the sleek presentation and extensive menu masks mediocre food that only manages to tease you about the real thing. This is the second installation of the Shuangjing stalwart which has been satisfying the foreigner desire for burgers, Tex-Mex, pancakes and other breakfast food for years, though the Sihui branch might require a compass to find. It's a shame that the staff boasts about the delivery service, because the grey and white diner décor is beautiful.
The small setting is perfect for a casual dinner, with one waiter barely visible behind a tall counter relying on technological doodads to place orders rather than traditionally waiting on tables. Regardless, the service is effective and prompt—only a few minutes after ordering, we were served a round of artificial-tasting banana milkshakes (¥20) and fresh guacamole (¥45) made at the table, though the side of corn chips could have doubled as house siding. A Greek salad (¥39) was enormous, though the colossal amounts of bitter feta cheese distracted from the taste. The same goes for a small Lily's-style pizza (¥55), overflowing with cut meats and loosely stacked cheese despite looking on par with some of the better pizza chains around town. The only standout was the ordinary cheese burger (¥35), perfectly spiced, big enough to be satisfying, and great with a side of fries (¥10). On the flip side, though the menu emphasizes the Tex-Mex offerings, the chicken burritos (¥45) would be better advertised as a wrap—or not at all. Finish off your meal with a hot gooey brownie covered in vanilla ice cream (¥15), so at least you can have a true American aftertaste on the way home.
