Vedas: This Indian Spot Has a New Space, But the Same Great Taste
When Vedas was open in its gorgeous old location just off Jianguo Lu, it was one of our favorite places for Indian. It's moved now, but thankfully, we enjoy the food as much as ever. The décor has kept its luxurious maharaja feel in a new spot across the hall from Xibo, which just about makes up for the ride up in one of Shanghai's ugliest elevators. The lighting is dark and the restaurant is generally quiet, making it a good choice for a romantic date or simply for some idle people-watching down onto Changshu Lu.
Standards such as vegetable samosas (RMB48) and palak paneer (RMB60) taste exactly as you'd want them to. The samosas are fried to a golden crisp and stuffed with the usual suspects: potatoes, onion, carrot, peas, garam masala; the creamy spinach in the palak paneer is vibrant and you will need piece after piece of garlic naan (RMB22) or whole wheat tandoori roti (RMB20) to sop it up.
The light coconut Goan fish curry (RMB68) lets the flaky tilapia hunks shine with a helping hand from tangy whole mustard seeds. The tandoori broccoli (RMB58) is marinated in garlic, ginger, chili and star anise then coated in a gram flour batter and popped in the tandoor oven giving it a smoky, crisp exterior.
Unfortunately the service is not completely on par with the food and the setting, which is surprising since this is a relocation and not an opening. The service was always top notch in the old place. It was a bit hard to get servers' attention to order, and even then they tried to bus our food before we were ready. It's definitely something to note, but it's not anything that will prevent us from returning.
