Beijing Tuk Tuk Thai’s Shrimp Vermicelli Salad Stands Out

Ever since we first tried Tuk Tuk Thai last year, we’ve been looking around for competitors to the restaurant’s shrimp vermicelli salad (¥38). But it’s harder than you’d think to find this kind of dish, and vaguely similar versions just don’t stack up. Now that the weather’s finally warmed up, it’s a perfect time to try this cool, invigorating, tropical treat. The salad is a large portion of glass noodles on a bed of lettuce, mixed with red chili flakes, sliced green chilis, cilantro, white onion, spring onion, celery, tiny bits of pork and rather untraditional but still tasty mu’er mushooms. The salad is surrounded by halved cherry tomatoes and topped with three shrimp. A whole Thai lime is squeezed over the dish right before serving, giving it a really pleasant sour flavor. The salad’s definitely spicy, and gets more so towards the end, when you’re down to the noodles and all the leftover sauce, and the chilis balance really well with the cooling cilantro. It’s a great starter before trying the steamed perch with lime (¥88), which is the restaurant’s most popular dish, and also features a great blend of sour and spice.
