Shanghai's Best Beer Battered Fish 'n Chips
- Shanghai's Best Beer Battered Fish 'n Chips
There's nothing more satisfying that a giant plate of beer battered fish 'n chips. Whether you like them with a side of mushy peas or hearty dose of vinegar, there's a version in Shanghai for every taste. We rounded up three of the best in town, so if you're feeling hungry check them out below.
The Sailors | European
The Sailors offers a homestyle Aussie fish 'n chips experience with a beer-battered selection of fish, authentic chip-shop chips and mushy peas on the side (RMB38). The portions are on the small side, but their sampler platter (RMB88), featuring a piece each of their flounder, pollack and sea bass and filled out with chips and a mountain of deep-fried shrimp, scallops and calamari rings, is good for two, especially if you tack on a couple of cheap Stellas (RMB20 each).
Catch! | European
For a more sophisticated plate of fish 'n chips head over to Catch!, Yongkang Lu's second fish shack. The space is as small as it gets, with only enough seats inside for four at a time, but there's sidewalk seating for more now that it's warm out. The menu is similarly small, with just three fish options (monkfish, RMB85; ling RMB65 and blue cod RMB50) to match with your choice of three thinly applied batters (backwoods beer, herbal goodness and spicy Asian chilis), but these are small cuts of pleasingly fresh New Zealand line-caught fish served alongside a herby, homemade tartar sauce. You'll even have the option of sweet potato fries here.
The Camel | Bars
The long-running title-holder for the best fish 'n chips in Shanghai, we've even heard diners compare The Camel's to the best that their home country offers. The neighborhood bar serves up large fillets of fish wrapped in a golden batter alongside chunky chips and all the condiments (RMB90). It's a great remedy for homesickness, and with a new location just opened out in Pudong, diners on both sides of the river will now have a chance to enjoy it.
