Blend Café & Lounge: A Charming New Dining Spot with a Hidden Patio

Blend makes a great first impression. With an inconspicuous entrance, dim lighting in the front foyer and and a charming hidden patio in the rear, this is one of the most welcoming of any of the new cafés we've seen recently.

Service is genuine and warm, led by the shop's kind owner, and the menu is filled mostly with drinks, offering everything from coffees to cocktails. We'd heard about Blend's smoothies in advance, and so we started with their "Mangolicious" option (RMB38 for the small, RMB42 for the large). It was sublimely thick and fruity. Our only complaint was that we didn't have a wider straw to vacuum it all up more quickly.

There's a short menu if you're looking for food, but the fare here can't yet hold its own. The server-recommended beef stew (RMB50) was too dry for our liking. On the upside, it did come with a soup of the day (a passable pumpkin soup) as part of an opening special. The pear consommé (RMB45) to finish was a step better, served à la mode with some excellent vanilla ice cream, but it still had a bit too much of a "made at home" feel.

As a simple café though, Blend holds promise—an afternoon out on their patio with a smoothie and a book from their small library is one well spent.
