Time Zone 8 Sushi & Yakitori BBQ Bar in 798 District
Time Zone 8 Sushi Bar in 798 Art District
After this weekend’s Affordable Art Beijing Art Fair in 798 Art District, I have no doubt a lot more of Beijing’s art buyers, art geeks and interested window shoppers browsing the walls of AAB all finally got their chance to try the new Time Zone 8 Sushi Bar.
Even after the AAB invite-only launch party was near finished on Friday night, there were still fellow art friends among the last diners at close to 10PM still getting their fill of Timezone 8′s rendition of Hatsune sushi rolls.
The last time I visited this space, it was still in soft opening, but now the restaurant looks fully operational with all the tables properly set and sushi rolls flowing out to hungry customers. I only wished I had come during peak dining hours to capture photos of a more lively atmosphere.
LumDimSum Snapshots of Time Zone 8′s Sushi Bar:
In any case, I’m just happy I got there in time before it was last call for restaurant orders and I was pleased to see a few other late-night diners stumbling in from the free-flow wine AAB launch party with serious cases of post-art-purchasing-munchies. Here’s a summary of what we quickly devoured within minutes only to wish we had ordered more (but we were too late to add more dishes to our order since it was already last-call for final orders when we sat down).
My first time seeing the menu, I was pleased to see 9 different Signature Makizushi Rolled Sushi including a Red Dinosaur Roll RMB 58 (aka Hatsune’s 119 Roll), Factory Roll RMB 82 (aka Hatsune’s Butterfly Roll), Rolling Thunder Roll RMB 68 (Hatsune’s Dragon Roll), and a few new rolls like the 798 Roll (RMB 72) and Time Zone 8 Roll (RMB 58). All sushi rolls range from RMB 50-98. The menu also features 10 different Hand Rolls, 6 thin rolls, 7 varieties of Nigiri Sushi, 8 types of sashimi and 3 assorted sashimi platters.
The back of the menu lists a variety of cold dishes, yakitori skewers, yakitori grilled meats and seafoodand rice and noodle based dishes including Tonkotsu Pork Ramen (RMB 42) and Oyako Don: chicken and egg over rice (RMB 28).
LumDimSum Snapshots of Dishes at Time Zone 8:
Edamame (RMB 18) / Quail Eggs Yakitori (RMB 6 each)
Fresh Gingko Nuts Yakitori (RMB 8 each) / Yakitori Grilled Chicken and Onion Skewers (RMB 8 each)
Yakitori Grilled Smoked Salmon (RMB 38) / Chicken Drum Sticks
Time Zone 8 Roll (RMB 58): Torched White Tuna, Tobiko, Shiso, Wasabi Mayo, Unagi Sauce, Green Onions
Bauhaus Roll (RMB 82): Torched Salmon Sashimi, Crispy Salmon Skin & Salmon Roe
Factory Roll (RMB 82): Shrimp Tempera rolled with Grilled Eel and Drizzled with Unagi Sauce and Green Onions
I can’t say I will be traveling out of my way to go to Time Zone 8 when I live so close to the original inspiration (both branches of Hatsune in Guanghua Lu and Sanlitun Village), but it’s fantastic news to know that 798 now offers the same quality California-style sushi rolls we’ve grown to love and crave from Hatsune and the addicting yakitori BBQ meats and seafood from Kagen (also part of the Hatsune Restaurant Group).
