Day-In: Barbecue Hits

See All 1 Photos

Day-In Restaurant is a nice spin on the familiar neighborhood Chinese delivery archetype, a convincing option for late night eats in the Sanlitun area.

The menu is charmingly eclectic, a regular map of local cuisine ranging from dim sum to tasty spicy fish and barbecue. Specialization, though, would only help Day-In—by trying to make everything, the restaurant ends up with a hit-or-miss menu that sparks discussion of more reliable versions of each dish elsewhere.

The space, hidden away in an alcove of the Sanlitun SOHO maze, is just as polka-dotted as its menu. Flags from around the world are hung up between brush-stroke calligraphy and sports games on flat-screen TVs. Servers were incredibly eager at first sight of us: one foot in the door and someone appeared to help us grab a seat and put a menu in our hand. The same eagerness extends to clearing away plates.

Per recommendation, we tried to fight the pounding heat with a glass of specialty "Colorful Summer" (RMB25), a concoction so sweet that watering it down was painfully necessary. The fresh four angled bean (RMB28), cooked with just enough garlic and a hint of spices, was a welcome change. The seafood off the rather extensive barbecue menu was a hit, worthy of any higher-end locale, and a steal at RMB16.

Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the equally promoted dim sum. The roast pork buns (RMB18) were merely passable. What really makes this restaurant shine, though, is the barbecue fish (RMB38-138/500g depending on the fish). It's the first thing on the menu and probably the first thing you'll think fondly of the next day.
