Best Fake Art in Beijing
Don’t fill that unsightly empty space above your couch with any old cheap print when you can put up a classic work of art—a fake one, that is. Skilled painters can recreate any work for a small price.
These aren’t the dime-a-dozen Chinese landscapes or panda portraits. You can commission a real oil painting of any image that you provide to the store. You can get anything on canvas, from leading Chinese contemporary classics from 798, masterpieces from your old art history textbook, or even snapshots from your visa run abroad.
Prices vary depending on how big you want it and how complicated the piece is. Frames are almost always available for a small fee, and can be mounted quickly and efficiently with or without a glass pane, right and ready to decorate the wall of your humble Beijing home.
Get Your Fake On
Sanlitun shoppers can head to J.M. Picture and Framing at 2 Sanlitun Bar Street. You’ll recognize it by the many recreations of modern Chinese works hanging throughout the store. Canvases are available in a variety of sizes, from 30x40 cm for ¥1,200, to 1x1.2m for ¥3,600. Expect to wait about a month to get the full product. Frames cost ¥45 per meter depending on the quality of frame, and should take no longer than a week to finish.
The Beijing Wenzao Shangmao Center, a low-key store located in the clutch of art supply stores right across the street from the National Museum of China façade at 14 Wusi Dajie, offers two levels of quality—one ranging from about ¥700 to ¥800 and another up to around ¥2,000 depending on your preferences. Canvas sizes are limited, but you can take the painting home within 10 days.
