Six Things to Salivate In Shanghai

by luhlir

A Chili Cook-off, Sunday block party (with free hotdogs), an oyster shucking competition, a workout seminar, a bachelor auction (hopefully with red roses) and raw cooking demos. We've got six ideal events to keep you busy this weekend!

Chili Cook-off
Its time once again to prepare your taste buds for the second annual Pistolera Chili Cook-off on the patio at the Jinqiao restaurant. Three time defending Shanghai Chili Champion “Tabasco” (I hope that’s his real name) will be your host for the day. So if you feel like you have the ultimate chili recipe register your team with the restaurant manager. Be sure to expect some hot and spicy Chili, but don't worry, there will be plenty of beer to reduce the heat. Entry is RMB100 for adults, while children are half price. This competition is sure to be muy caliente!

Free Hotdogs!
In honor of Earth Day and for the love of their neighbors, Brownstone is opening their courtyard again for a block party. Just like last year, there will be deals on drinks, and a wide selection of BBQ skewers and FREE HOT DOGS! There will even be live performances from DJ Teng Boon & Gabin Folly Akakpo on African drums. Also be sure to bring old clothes and shoes to donate them to Fair Trade and receive a complimentary sparkling cocktail. All proceeds go to the Roots & Shoots Million Tree Project. It’s a perfect way to spend a Sunday. And did we mention the free hot dogs?

Oyster Festival
If you have been dying for some tasty oysters then head on over to the newly opened Steak & Oyster Bar this weekend for Shanghai’s first oyster festival. You will be treated to all-you-can-eat oysters prepared by five-star chefs. You'll also get to sip on free-flow Champange and wine, while live music plays all day. If you are dying to show off your shucking skillz you can even participate in a oyster shucking competition (just keep all your fingers intact!). Sign up via email and you get discounted tickets for the festival. In addition to food and wine there will be lucky draws throughout the day. Don’t miss out! RMB338 presale, RMB388 at the door.

Balance Your Body
Have you been trying to lose weight, and figure out the best workout for you? Well then its time to "Balance the Body and Burn the Fat" this Saturday at a seminar conducted by Exercise Physiologist Jon Robinson. The seminar will teach you how to maximize fat loss, how to achieve perfect posture and how to alleviate neck and back pain. RMB150 for the seminar, which includes one standard drink and a copy of Robinsons seminar video. And lets face it? All of us could definitely work on our posture.

Bachelor Auction
Spring is the time of year to get rid of the old and bring in the new, so why not a new man? Non-profit SCAA is hosting a bachelor auction at Geisha, to raise money for rescued animals. Why not bring your friends to drink, eat and potentially outbid each other for what could be Mr. Right? Unfortunately it is too late for all you eligible single men to sign up, but fingers crossed their next fundraiser will be a bachelorette auction…

Raw Cooking
Raw cooking has become extremely popular in the West, and the popularity is increasing here in Shanghai. Why not try your hand and raw cooking this Sunday for the final installment of cooking demos and tastings. Two raw food chefs from The Kitchen At will present demos and tasting menus like avocado and cilantro soup, raw tacos, raw brownies, raw pasta and raspberry ice-cream cake. Raw food never sounded so delicious. RSVP by e-mail. The class costs RMB400 per person.
